Beginner's Guide to Cannabis in Vancouver

Coastal Green · 2026

Buying cannabis for the first time at a licensed Vancouver dispensary is less intimidating than most people expect. The products are well-labelled, the staff are used to first-time buyers, and nobody is going to pressure you into anything. That said, knowing a few things before you walk in makes the whole experience faster and more useful.

What to Bring

Government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth. You need to be 19 or older. A passport, BC driver's licence, or foreign driver's licence all work. Digital ID on your phone does not. Bring the physical document.

You don't need to know what you want before you arrive. That is what the staff are there for.

The Main Product Categories

Cannabis comes in a few distinct formats and each one works differently. Here is what you will see on the shelf and what the difference actually means in practice.

Flower

Dried cannabis, sold in sealed packages. This is the traditional format. You smoke it in a pipe, bong, or joint. The effect comes on in a few minutes and lasts one to two hours. The THC percentage on the label is the main potency indicator but terpenes, the aromatic compounds in the flower, have a significant effect on how it actually feels. Ask our team what the terpene profile looks like on whatever you are considering.

Pre-Rolls

Pre-rolled joints. Ready to light. Same effect as flower, no preparation needed. For a first-time buyer who wants to try smoking without buying equipment, a single pre-roll is the lowest-commitment entry point. Start with something in the moderate THC range, not the highest number on the shelf.

Vapes

A battery heats cannabis oil in a cartridge and you inhale the vapour. Faster onset than edibles, more discreet than smoking, easier to control the dose than flower. If you want a smoke-free experience, a vape is the most accessible starting point. Distillate cartridges are the most common format and the most affordable. Live resin cartridges cost more and taste closer to actual flower.

Edibles

Cannabis-infused food and drink. Gummies are the most common. The effect takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to arrive because the THC is processed through your digestive system. It lasts longer than smoking or vaping, typically 3 to 6 hours. Start with 2.5mg to 5mg. Wait 90 minutes before deciding if you want more. This is the category where most bad first experiences happen, almost always because someone took a second dose too early.

Beverages

THC-infused drinks. Faster onset than most edibles because of nanoemulsion technology, typically 15 to 45 minutes. A good format for first-timers who want something social and easy to manage. Start with half a can and wait.

Concentrates

Potent cannabis extracts including shatter, live resin, and hash. Higher THC concentration than flower. Generally not where we would point a first-time buyer. Come back to this category once you have a sense of how cannabis affects you.

CBD Products

Products with high cannabidiol content and low or no THC. CBD does not produce the psychoactive high associated with THC. Good starting point if you want to try cannabis without any intoxicating effect, or if you are specifically interested in the wellness applications.

How Much Should You Buy Your First Time

Less than you think. A single pre-roll, a couple of gummies, or one small vape cartridge is enough to figure out how cannabis affects you before committing to a larger purchase. You can always come back.

What to Tell the Budtender

Tell us it's your first time. We hear this every day and it genuinely changes what we recommend. Also useful: what effect you are looking for, whether you want to feel relaxed or uplifted or just sleep better, whether you prefer not to smoke, and what your budget is. None of these questions have wrong answers and the more context you give us, the more useful the recommendation.
