The difference between shatter and live resin is the starting material: shatter is extracted from dried plants and refined into a glassy slab, while live resin comes from fresh-frozen plants and keeps more terpenes. Shatter and live resin are both cannabis concentrates, but they are made differently and produce a different experience. Understanding the distinction helps you choose the right product at a BC dispensary. We carry both at all three Coastal Green locations, including our two Vancouver stores on Dunsmuir Street store and Main Street.

Shatter is made using solvent-based extraction, typically butane or CO2. The plant material is processed to strip out cannabinoids and terpenes, then purged of the solvent. The result is a translucent, amber-coloured slab that breaks cleanly when handled cold. Shatter tends to be high in THC, often 70% to 85%, with a clean terpene profile. It is a reliable concentrate and usually one of the better value options per gram in the concentrates section.
Live resin starts with freshly frozen plant material. Instead of drying and curing the cannabis first, it goes straight from harvest into a deep freeze. This locks in terpenes lost during drying. The result is a concentrate with a noticeably more complex aroma and flavour. Live resin can come as sauce, badder, budder, or crystalline structures in terpene-rich liquid. THC percentage is often lower than shatter because of the higher terpene content, but the effect is frequently described as richer.
Buy shatter if you want the highest THC at the lowest price and flavour is not a priority. Buy live resin if the full-spectrum experience matters to you and you are willing to pay more per gram. Live resin vape cartridges make the format accessible for people without a dab rig. Our Friday deal day takes 15% off the full concentrates category at all three locations.
