Are magic mushrooms legal in Vancouver?

Psilocybin and psilocin, the compounds that make magic mushrooms work, sit in Schedule III of the federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Possessing them is a criminal offence. Selling, growing or importing them is treated far more seriously. BC can't change a federal schedule, and neither can the City of Vancouver.

No. From January 31, 2023, BC ran a pilot that removed criminal penalties for carrying up to 2.5 grams of certain drugs: opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA. Psilocybin was never on that list. The pilot expired on January 31, 2026, and the province chose not to renew it.

No. No licence in Canada lets a store sell psilocybin to the public, so every mushroom shop, website and delivery service in Vancouver operates outside the law. Vancouver police raided three mushroom storefronts in November 2023. Their products skip lab testing, so neither the dose nor the species on the label can be trusted.

Health Canada allows psilocybin for a small number of patients, case by case, when a doctor applies through its Special Access Program. It isn't sold over any counter, and a mushroom shop can't supply it legally.

Cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2018 for adults 19 and over. It's sold in provincially licensed stores, lab-tested for potency and contaminants, and labelled with its exact THC and CBD content. Psilocybin has none of that.

The two also feel different. Psilocybin and THC act on different receptors in the brain, and cannabis doesn't produce a mushroom trip. A high dose of THC can still bring strong effects, including anxiety and paranoia, so dose carefully.
