Can you smoke weed in a Vancouver hotel?

BC bans smoking and vaping cannabis in enclosed public places, but it makes an exception for a registered hotel guest in the room assigned to them and their party. So the law itself doesn't stop you. The hotel does, through its own rules and your booking terms.

The exception stops at your door. Hallways, lobbies, elevators, restaurants and other shared spaces stay off limits, and so does anywhere within 6 metres of a doorway, open window or air intake. A ticket for smoking cannabis in a banned place costs $230.

Most Vancouver hotels are fully non-smoking, and many say so for balconies too. A policy that bans smoking almost always covers cannabis and vaping as well. Break it and the hotel can add a cleaning fee to your bill, often a few hundred dollars, and some will ask you to leave.

Check the policy before you book, not after you arrive. If a hotel offers smoking rooms, ask in writing whether cannabis counts.

A balcony follows the hotel's rules, and most non-smoking hotels include them. Public patios at restaurants and bars are off limits for cannabis under BC law.

BC treats vaping cannabis the same way as smoking it: allowed in your own room by law, and banned wherever the hotel's policy says so. Vapes smell less than a joint, but they still set off some smoke detectors, and staff can still smell them.

BC's indoor rules cover smoking and vaping, not eating or drinking. Edibles and cannabis drinks leave no smoke and no smell, so they're the simplest choice for a hotel stay. If you're new to them, start with 2.5 mg to 5 mg of THC and wait 2 hours before taking more.

A private host can allow cannabis, and some Vancouver listings are marked smoking-friendly. Many condo buildings have strata bylaws that ban smoking in units and on balconies, and those bind the host too. Get the host's answer in writing before you light up.
